The General Leclerc monument in Alençon
Located near the Pont Neuf in Alençon, the Leclerc monument was inaugurated on March 15, 1970 to commemorate the liberation of the city by General Leclerc?s division.
The local population is familiar with the silhouette of the bronze man with a cane, leaning against a large stone book listing important dates in the history of the 2nd Armored Division and a hinge in the shape of a Lorraine cross. Two communes in the Orne département are mentioned: Alençon and Ecouché.
Alençon was liberated on August 12, 1944. On the evening of August 11, the 4th Squadron of the 12th Cuirassiers Regiment was three kilometers from Alençon, with the attack scheduled for the following day.
However, during the night, a shell hit the Champfleur headquarters, killing two soldiers. The sound of the explosion woke up Leclerc, who immediately went to Saint-Gilles. He made contact with Raymond Ciroux, a nineteen-year-old Resistance fighter, who volunteered to help.
Ciroux confirmed to Leclerc that the Germans had left Alençon and that the town?s bridges were not mined. Leclerc decided to enter Alençon and personally take part in the expedition. A column of jeeps and armored vehicles, led by Raymond Ciroux, was set in motion during the night. The town of Alençon was liberated in the middle of the night without a single shot being fired.
On the morning of August 12, Leclerc supervised the liberation of Alençon and the progress of his men from his command post near the Pont Neuf.
Alençon was thus the first town in mainland France to be liberated by a unit under French command. Like Paris and Strasbourg later on, Alençon is part of the Leclerc Division legend.
