In the heart of this small sloping wood, one can see more or less circular holes dug in the trunks of dead trees. This work is the work of birds with pointed and powerful beaks, capable of shaping a "lodge" in decaying wood: the woodpeckers.
The two most common species in our countryside frequent the site: the green woodpecker and the spotted woodpecker.
During the maintenance of wooded areas, it is advisable to leave the cut wood on the spot if it cannot be used otherwise.
The wood pile is a popular refuge for amphibians and small mammals. It is also the pantry of insects called 'xylophagous' or mushrooms.
