It rises on the heights of Tinchebray on the border of the three Lower Normandy départements, then flows in a general north-easterly direction through the Orne region. The river flows mainly through Condé-sur-Noireau, where it receives its main tributary, the Druance (31 km long), on the left bank. After defining the boundary between the Orne and Calvados departments, the Noireau joins the Orne on the left bank at Pont-d'Ouilly, after a 43-kilometre course.
