Point de vue sur l'Orne

L’Orne est un élément si constitutif du Calvados que le département a bien failli être baptisé “Basse-Orne” à la Révolution. Poumon économique et naturel, le fleuve est en perpétuelle interaction avec l’homme. Son artificialisation croissante, marquée par la création du canal de Caen à la mer, est l’histoire d’un effort constant pour le contrôler et l’exploiter au profit de l’homme. Aujourd’hui, de nouvelles préoccupations cherchent à lui rendre, au moins partiellement, un destin plus naturel.

The Orne is such an integral part of Calvados that the département was almost christened ?Basse-Orne? during the French Revolution. An economic and natural lung, the river is in perpetual interaction with man. Its increasing artificialization, marked by the creation of the Caen Canal, is the story of a constant effort to control and exploit it for the benefit of mankind. Today, new concerns are seeking to return it, at least in part, to a more natural destiny.
