Description
“As my visits continued, some of the wonders of my childhood were reawakened within me. Giverny became a catalyst, a starting point. Instinctively, I quickly realised the appeal of this vibrant jumble of plants and water. It would take time to develop an intimacy with the place. I needed to make it my own.”
An interview with Jean Gaumy, a leading figure in photography who joined the Gamma and then Magnum agencies, where he covered major international events. His personal body of work, devoted to enclosed worlds – prisons, submarines, trawlers and polar research stations – has, for several years, been moving towards a more contemplative style of photography. Elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 2016, he has been the official painter to the Navy since 2022 and will serve as President of the Académie in 2026.
