Bruno Dufour-Coppolani: “The Depth of Surfaces”
At the heart of the artist’s painterly approach—which most often unfolds in large formats—the question of the surface fuels a reflection on time, traces, and wear. In recent years, his work has focused more specifically on the theme of skin, which, like painting, %AB reveals on the surface what lies deep within %BB.
The artist has visited nursing homes to encounter frail bodies marked by the passage of time. He engages his gaze and his practice with the concrete reality of aging. He searches the epidermis for the imprint of a raw humanity, of a palpable truth.
“The skin speaks to us of finitude. Painting and the skin have this in common: they reveal on the surface what lies deeper.”
The exhibition is structured around the artist’s favorite themes: faces and skin: “The skin tells us more than it shows; it is the face. In this, it compels us.”
To portray the face by revealing the skin is, by moving away from form, to draw closer to the face. If the portrait refers to identity, the face invites us to humanity %BB
In this work, painting becomes a gesture of presence, an act of tenderness in the face of aging, %E0 fading, %E0 and finitude. The artist invites us to cast a slow, attentive gaze upon what usually escapes our notice or disturbs us.
Bruno Dufour-Coppolani was born in 1954 in Périers in the Manche department.
