À partir d’archives, de témoignages et de pèlerinages, Lazare Pasquer recompose le mythe populaire de son idole, Marco Pantani, cycliste italien mort à 34 ans. Comment voir dans la chute la promesse d’un élan ?
Entre retour d’enquête et rituel plastique, se dessine une tentative de faire commun, pour dire ce qu’un être tombé peut transmettre à celles et ceux qui restent debout. Transformer une mort en manifeste. Rendre hommage, faire monde, c’est la même chose.
« En 2024, j’ai eu un choc, j’allais avoir 34 ans, l’âge de mort de Marco Pantani, mon idole d’enfance. Je me suis senti invité à fouiller les sources de sa légende – ses chutes, ses exploits, ses métamorphoses – et ce sont mes propres racines que j’ai déterrées. Dans son sillage je me suis levé, j’ai volé, je suis tombé, puis reparti. Tomber, c’est éprouver la gravité, accepter l’abandon, mais c’est aussi sentir l’élan du redressement, la force qui ramène à la verticale. »

Somewhere between investigative reporting and a visual ritual, an attempt emerges to forge a shared experience—to express what a fallen being can convey to those who remain standing. To transform a death into a manifesto. To pay homage and to create a world—it is one and the same.
%AB In 2024, I was struck by a realization: I was about to turn 34, the age at which Marco Pantani, my childhood idol, died. I felt compelled to delve into the origins of his legend—his falls, his feats, his transformations—and in doing so, I unearthed my own roots. Following in his footsteps, I got up, I soared, I fell, and then I set off again. To fall is to experience gravity, to accept defeat, but it is also to feel the momentum of getting back up, the force that pulls you back to the vertical. %BB
