In the past, on the "fire places" (still visible), the charcoal makers piled up wooden logs carefully, then covered them with earth and set them on fire. This technique allowed a slow and incomplete combustion of the wood, which gave the charcoal.
The Romans also left many traces in the area. The mound is noted as a "Roman camp" on the IGN maps. A treasure of 5,000 Roman medals was even discovered in the 19th century not far from here in the forest of Petite Gouffern. On this place, an imposing stone always arouses the imagination: geological or historical curiosity.
